Background

HISTORY
The subject Economics was started as compulsory subject from the very inception of the
college, i.e.1986. Initially the classes were started by Dr. Rofique Ahmed, a well known
academician, researcher and author of number of books presently working as Associate
Professor at Bahona College, Jorhat. He was accompanied by Mr. Chattadhar Borah, subject
teacher of Gargaon HS School, Sivasagar. The concerned University accorded permission to
start this subject as general standard at first. Then, accorded permission to start Major in

4. PROGRAMME OUTCOME
Economics subject enables the learners to build up a professional carrier as economists, financial
advisors, economics planners and policy makers. It prepares them to cope up with the stress and strain
involved in the process of economic development. It also focuses on the behavior and interactions of
economic agents and how economics work. It is the study of how societies use scarce resources to
produce valuable commodities and distribute them among different people. The course B.A. in
economics include courses like micro and macro economics theory, Indian economy, public
economics, monetary economics, mathematical economics, econometric methods, environmental
economics, developmental economics etc. Microeconomics analyzes basic elements in the economy,
including indivisual agents and markets, their interactions, and the outcomes of interactions.

Indivisual agents may include, for example, households, firms, buyers, and sellers. Macroeconomics
analyzes the entire economy (meaning aggregated production, consumption, savings, and investment)
and issues affecting it, including unemployment of resources (labour, capital, and land), inflation,
economic growth, and the public policies that address these issues (monetary, fiscal, and other
policies). These courses provide the fundamental skills that are essential in terms of the theoretical
and empirical cum practical aspects of the discipline. Through organizing guest lectures, workshops,
seminars, industrial visit and extension activities it enables students to learn economics, particularly
its applications foster the development of their own skills in economic reasoning and understanding.
5. COURSE SPECIFIC OUTCOME
1. To enable students in acquisition of economic aspects of modern society, to make them
familiar with techniques for the analysis of contemporary economic problems and to develop
an ability to exercise judgments in evaluating public policies in the students.
2. To develop strong numeracy and statistical skills
3. To enhance analytical ability of students. In other words, to enable the students to analyze the
complex data sets.
4. To prepare the students to work in different fields like civil service, Indian economic service,
planning and administrative departments, banking & insurance, multinational corporations
education etc.
5. To enable the students to acquire various skills which they can use to deal with their real- life
situations. I.e. how to manage unlimited wants with limited resources.
 Microeconomics will enable the students to apply supply and demand analysis to examine the
impact of government regulation. It also enables them to explain determinants of demand,
responses of market and the benefits of exchange.
 Macroeconomics will provide knowledge regarding the formulation of broad economic
policies that maximize the level of national income, providing economic growth to achieve
sustainability, full employment, price stability , increasingly productivity etc.
 Money and banking attempts to describe carefully the basics of the subject like money, value
of money, theories of money, banking and international financial institutions.
 International trade and public finance enables the students the pattern and nature of
international trade and their contributions to economic development. It also enables learners
to know the role of public authorities in raising revenue and its spending.
 Economic thought gives idea to the students about the systematic development of economic
theories beginning from pre-modern and modern era.
 Economic development makes the students to understand the aspect of development process
in low income countries. Its focus is on improving the potential for the mass of population
through health and education.
 Indian economy makes learners to understand the economic functioning and condition of our
country in the context of past, present and future.
 Environmental problems are the burning issues of present day. The study of the subject
environmental economics helps the students to know the methods of controlling environment
pollution and thereby to achieve sustainable development.
